When you spend a whole weekend spinning it’s amazing how much you get done. Especially when you neglect things like cleaning and regular household chores and such. Not something I recommend on a regular basis, because you play catch-up all the following week, but every once in a while it’s a good thing. Plus I was in a mode and just could not stop :)

Blue wool from Spinners Hill
Abused and blue

First off I finished some blue wool picked up from Spinners Hill at Rhinebeck this year. The blue/green color just grabbed me so I had to grab some of it. I only picked up 5oz because I was unsure of exactly what it was, being marked just wool.

The fun part was finishing this stuff. It was my first time totally abusing wool and I absolutely love how it turned out. It’s like my own felted tweed :) I first put it in hot water and smooshed it up a bit, then in cold with some more smooshing. I then took it outside and did my regular windmill spin and then banged it on the fence post a couple of times. I so wish I took before and after pictures because the difference is huge. What I ended up with is 272 yards at 11 wpi.

Next I have some BFL from Spunky Eclectic in Hot Rod. Spinner Central, a spinning group on Ravelry, has monthly challenges and this months included BFL and chained plying – so that’s what I did.

But since I had two in the stash I also did a traditional 3 ply.

3 ply
Hot Rod 3 ply

In the regular 3 ply the browns and golds dominate, giving a very fall like appearance of colors. Yet in the chained ply the red and pinks dominate, much more summery in color. It was fun seeing how different plying methods give a whole different look to the finished yarn. The chained ply yielded 155 yards at 12 wpi, and the traditional 3 ply 174 yards at 15 wpi.

I still need much more practice with chained plying, so guess what I’m working on now? :)

My 2yr old camera is now dying the slow death. Hopefully I’m able to get a new one before it totally goes - until then please excuse the funky white splotches and slight blurriness

I love those FO. I haven’t tried a 3 ply, but I use Chain Plying for my sock yarn. Those colors look amazing. My goal is to do a 3-ply. Thanks for showing off some fibery goodness.

Oh wow, that chain plyed yarn is beautiful! I’m not al that keen on the effect of regular plying on hand dyed fibre, but I love this chain plyed skein. Very impressive, and so evenly spun.

They look amazing! I love how the chained plied yarn turned out. Much better than my own attempts. ;)
