I’m telling you if you spin and do not belong to a guild – find one. Find one quick. These girls can so lift your spirits. It’s been awhile since I’ve been able to make it to a meeting, and now I know why I miss these women (and men) so much.
The kudos I received on my spinning sent me over the top. Somehow I have gone from spastic newbie to a legit spinner that at times even may know what she’s doing. Talk about a spinning high. So many compliments on my fine (meaning skinny, and you all know how I have been working on getting the skinny) singles. What I had on my wheel was the other half of this:
which is some fiber I got from Tina many moons ago (she was trying to open my eyes to other colors beyond the browns I seem to fixate on). It’s hard to tell in this picture – but this is my best Navajo ply yet (another item I’ve been working on) I finally found my way to smoother knots. And this fiber with it’s nups in it anyway really hides the few ones that are on the larger side. I split this one in half and did the red then the blue. What I’m spinning now I’m mixing up more to see if I can once again Navajo ply it and keep the color separations smooth.
But you can’t really experience a high without knowing what a low is – right? So now I must confess to this mess. Remember those blue thick silk singles I was dreaming about? Well thick singles were beyond my capabilities. So I attempted smaller singles that I would ply together figuring I would make something nice and lacy instead. After spinning these singles forever and only having half a bobbin filled, I got a little impatient. So I figured I would ball it up and ply what I had. In which I almost immediately made a big knotted mess (like I have done every single time I’ve attempted this) Oy! I was so frustrated I actually threw the whole mess in the trash. I did dig it out once I was back to normal as you can tell, but now what to do?
Spinning from a center pull ball is my next technique to overcome.
And I’ll leave you with this:
A little tidbit I picked up from my guild meeting. That’s right I’m now the proud owner of some wool that is left over from a carpet made for Mel Gibson. Talk about six degrees of separation, but for some strange reason it still makes me happy.

The ladies are right; your spinning looks wonderful. The singles are very fine. I like the color combination too. Center pull plying of Silk is pretty tough as you’ve figured out because it will tangle. I would recommend that you either keep on the bobbin or if you spin into center pull, do it with a toilet paper roll in the center (which you place on your lazy kate or other wherever) and ply with the outside yarn and not the inside; just for silk. Good luck.
i’m catching up on lots of posts here but wanted you to know that everything is looking lovely! the jamieson’s, the spinning, the lady E—oy! and the whole blog has a new look. you’ve been busy; it looks like a lot to me!
